Look up! It’s a crack! It’s a stain! It’s your ceiling! Yeah, you’ve maintained your walls, but you’ve def neglected your poor ceiling. We get it! We see how it would feel like a really daunting task. Being up on a ladder, straining your neck, rolling paint with your arms above your head, getting paint in your eyes. Painting a ceiling can be taxing and uncomfortable, but when done right, it can be totally manageable and very satisfying. So, when you can’t stand the sight of that big, sad leak stain above your tub one more day, here’s how to get the job done.
Steps to paint your ceiling
1. Prepare the room.
The more time you spend properly prepping, the less time it will take to paint. Remove smaller furniture, as well as curtains, lamps, etc. from the room. Cover bigger furniture with plastic and cover the floor by tapping down cardboard or newspaper with painter’s tape.
2. Clean and repair.
It’s time to retire those glow in the dark star stickers. Peel those bad boys off and wipe down corners and any areas that have accumulated dust. Repair any cracks, stains or damage that the ceiling may have using compound or spackle. Once your putty of choice is dry, sand the surface until it’s nice and even with sandpaper and clean up any dust.
3. Paint the perimeter and around light fixtures.
Before you get out the roller, it’s best to first paint the perimeter and around light fixtures with your brush. If you use the roller first and the brush second, you may notice streaks or marks that are difficult to blend in later.
4. Roll baby roll.
Now that you’ve applied a coat to all the borders and edges, you can paint with the roller. Roll the paint in vertical stripes from the corner to corner and try to slightly overlap each stripe to avoid unpainted gaps. Try to slide the roller on the surface and not to press too hard, as it can cause chips that are difficult to repair.
5. Roll baby roll, part 2.
Once the first coat has completely dried, apply the second coat by painting horizontal stripes, the opposite direction as the first coat. This way you will ensure that the paint is distributed evenly and will reduce the risk of leaving streaky marks or gaps.
6. The final touch.
Finally, and before the last coat has dried, take your roller without adding any paint and roll in the same direction as the first coat. It will give your work a smooth, flawless result.
We hope you can successfully paint your ceiling with the help of this guide.
